Installation
------------
o If the installation fails for some reason, the Setup program
leaves a WSSETUP.LOG file in your Windows directory, which
may contain information useful to you and/or our Tech Support
staff in determining the cause of the problem.

o Surfer will automatically detect which Windows platform you
are running and pick the appropriate setup option. If it detects
Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups, it will attempt to install
the 16-bit version. If it detects Windows NT or Windows 95 it will
attempt to install the 32-bit version. You can install the 16-bit
version in either Windows NT or Windows 95, however, you cannot
install the 32-bit version in Win 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups.
In any case the default directory will be C:\SURFER6.

o If the 32-bit version was installed, then you will have a
SURFER32.INI. If you have the 16-bit version, then there will be
a SURFER16.INI. If you install Surfer into a directory already
containing Surfer for Windows, your SURFER??.INI file will be
automatically renamed to SURFER??.BAK. If desired, you can
manually replace all or part of SURFER??.INI file with portions
   of your old file.

o If you already have a Surfer icon in your "Golden Software"
program group when you install Surfer, a second Surfer icon
will be created instead of the first one being replaced.
Manually remove the first one by clicking it once to select
it and then pressing the "Del" key to delete it.

Network Installation
--------------------
Surfer can be installed to operate on networked computers
in one of several ways:

   1. Locally on a workstation's hard drive for exclusive use
by that workstation. When Setup asks for a destination
directory, choose one on a local hard drive.

   2. The Surfer program files can reside remotely on a file
      server network drive.

The network administrator should first log onto the file
server. When Setup asks for a destination directory,
choose one on the file server. Setup will then ask if
you want to install Surfer in the file server directory
for exclusive use by this computer or for shared access.

Exclusive use is just like stand-alone use, except the file
server network drive is used instead of the workstation's
local drive. No other action is needed. However, the
workstation must be logged onto the file server before
      running Surfer.

If shared use is chosen, Setup will copy all the Surfer
files, plus the Setup program and its associated files to
the file server drive. When Setup has completed, the
installation diskettes are no longer needed. It is highly
recommended the administrator now flag the server directory
read-only. From each workstation that will be running
Surfer off the file server, someone must log onto the
server, start Windows and run the copy of Setup (SETUP.EXE)
that's in the server directory. When Setup asks for a
destination directory, choose one on a local hard drive.
Setup then allows two types of workstation installation:

         a) Surfer can be installed on the workstation's local
hard drive for stand-alone use later (user does not
have to be logged onto the server). This is just
like item #1 above. When Setup asks for a destin-
ation directory, choose one on a local hard drive.

         b) A few small Surfer files are copied from the server
to the workstation, while the bulk of the Surfer
files stay on the server. This allows many such
workstations to share a single copy of Surfer
without having the files duplicated on each computer.

*** ATTENTION: Using Surfer on more than one computer
*** requires appropriate network or multiuser licenses!

Golden Software Typefaces
-------------------------
Users of Golden Software's DOS Surfer product will
probably recognize these 25 typeface names that appear
in the Surfer for Windows Text Dialog:

   GS SET1
   GS SET2
   GS SET3
   GS SET4
   GS SET5
   GS SET6
   GS SET7
   GS SET8
   GS SET9
   GS SET10
   GS SET11
   GS SET12
   GS SET13
   GS SET14
   GS SET15
   GS SET16
   GS SET1FS
   GS SET4FS
   GS SET6FS
   GS SET10FS
   GS SET11FS
   GS SET1INT
   GS SET10INT
   GS CENTERED
   GS DEFAULT

They correspond EXACTLY to the 24 DOS Surfer Symbol Sets
described in Appendix B of the DOS Surfer Reference Manual.
They are stroked faces provided for the convenience of those
who either have DOS Surfer files they wish to use unmodified
with Surfer for Windows, or for ex-DOS Surfer users who want
to continue working with them.

There are three additional Golden Software Symbol faces:

   GS Helv
   GS Roman
   GS Symbol

each of which contains all 256 characters defined in the
standard Windows ANSI character set. GS Roman is a serif
face (analogous to Tms Rmn or Times), GS Helv is a san-serif
face (analogous to Helv or Arial) and GS Symbol corresponds
to the Windows (or Postscript) Symbol, which contains Greek
letters and various math symbols. These faces are more
useful to the user who doesn't care about DOS Surfer files
or just needs a stroked face (maybe for use with plotters)
that is laid-out like a "normal" Windows fonts.

You may disable one or more of these faces by manually editing
the SURFER??.INI file and placing a semi-colon (;) at the
beginning of the line containing the face's name. You will need
to restart Surfer for the change to take effect. They can be
enabled later by just deleting the semi-colon.

GS Scripter
-----------
GS Scripter uses a BASIC-like scripting language to automate
Surfer for Windows. It can be run by double clicking the
GS Scripter icon in Program Manager. After starting it, use
File Open to load one of the included sample scripts. To
execute the script use the Run Start command. For more help
on the scripting language and the Surfer script commands, see
the Surfer help file.

In Windows NT version 3.5x the explicit path name must be
used to locate and store files. The sample script files included
have been modified to work this way. You can also use the variable
"Path$ = Surf.StartupPath()" to indicate where your files are located.

VISUAL
------
In Excel you can view the GS Scripter commands via Object Browser. Follow
this procedure to install the Scripter commands into the object browser
for Excel 7:
1. Insert | Macro | Module
2. Tools | References, Browse..., Open SURFER32.EXE. This adds the
Surfer type library to Excels list of recognized libraries.
3. You can now use Excel's object browser to peruse Surfer's macro
commands, ie, see View | Object Browser and select Surfer for the
Library.

Removing Surfer from your system
--------------------------------
The Surfer installation adds the following section to
your WIN.INI file:

   [Surfer]
   SURFER_??=X:\XXXXX

where "X:\XXXXXX" is the drive and directory Surfer
was installed into. If you ever need to remove Surfer
from your system, just delete all the files from this
directory and (optionally) remove this section from your
WIN.INI file. Also remove any Surfer-related icons
from the "Golden Software" Program Manager group.

LASERJET, DESKJET PRINTER INFORMATION
-------------------------------------
LaserJet 4 problems.
A problem can arise when printing on a LaserJet 4 (or 4M non-PostScript).
TrueType text blocks can be wider than requested or character spacing can
be grossly incorrect. This has been fixed in version 31.V1.35 of the
LaserJet 4 driver. You can get this driver from CompuServe or from HP at
303-339-7009.

If you are unable to get the new driver we recommend using the LaserJet
III driver if you experience the problem.

LaserJet Series II and III problems.
On HP LaserJet II and LaserJet III printers, single characters in the
axis labels, axis titles, and text blocks do not print. In
Printer Setup Options: Turn on [x] Print TrueType as Graphics.
Use the Control Panel (Printers) to access the setup for your
LaserJet printer.

DeskJet problems.
On HP DeskJet printers, the last character in any text string does not
print. Un-remark the following lines in the SURFER??.INI file by removing
the semi-colon:

         [GSIMAGE]
         Windows Picture:Printer:Text=0x8000

VIDEO PROBLEMS
--------------
On some video cards (ATI & Trident), the last character in text blocks
is not displayed; however, printing does not seem to be affected.

    Solution 1
    ----------
Un-remark the following lines in the SURFER??.INI file by removing
     the semi-colon:

       [GSIMAGE]
       Windows Picture:Window:Text=0x8000

    Solution 2
    ----------
Change video driver to use "plain" VGA.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
----------------
Surfer has an error logging facility that will help to solve
your problems. To initialize this feature exit Surfer and at
the Program Manager click once on the Surfer icon. Then press
"ALT+ENTER"; this will bring up the File Properties for Surfer.
Click on the line that says Command Line. Change this line
from "C:\SURFER6\SURFER??.EXE" to "C:\SURFER6\SURFER??.EXE /L".
Now when you click OK and go back to the Program Manager you
can start Surfer. Next try to duplicate your problem. After
your Surfer session there will be an ASCII file in your Surfer
directory called "SURFER??.MSG". You can upload this file to
us on our BBS or send it in on a floppy disk. Please include
a description of your problem and include the file(s) necessary
to duplicate the problem with your message file.
